Calgary Looks West: Explore the City and the Rocky Mountains with a Private Driver

In winter, you may notice people in Calgary suddenly looking up and turning their eyes west. A long arch of clouds stretches across the horizon while the sky beneath it remains perfectly clear. This is a Chinook arch. It means warm, dry air is coming down from the mountains, and within just a few hours the temperature can rise by 15–20 degrees while the snow seems to melt before your eyes.

Calgary stands where the prairies meet the foothills, and the Rocky Mountains begin just about an hour and a half away by car. But getting to those postcard-perfect landscapes is more complicated than it may seem, and it is worth understanding the logistics before you arrive.

Three Faces of Calgary

The first Calgary is the cowboy city. Every July, the Calgary Stampede brings ten days of rodeo, parades and concerts. In 2026, the event attracted around 1.4 million visitors. The next Calgary Stampede will take place from July 9 to 18, 2027.

The second Calgary is Olympic. The city hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1988, and athletes still train at WinSport, where bobsleigh, luge and ski jumping competitions once took place.

The third Calgary is musical. Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, features a museum, recording studios and halls celebrating Canadian music.

And from the Calgary Tower, at a height of around 190 metres — even through its glass floor — you can see the city gradually give way to the prairies, with the mountains rising on the horizon.

How to Get to Moraine Lake

The closest major airport to Banff is in Calgary (YYC). Banff is approximately 144 kilometres away, or around an hour and a half by car. Canmore is about an hour and twenty minutes away, while Kananaskis can be reached in just over an hour.

At first, it seems simple: get in the car and drive. However, some of Banff National Park's most famous destinations have their own access rules.

Since 2023, private vehicles have not been permitted on the road to Moraine Lake. Visitors can reach the lake using a Parks Canada shuttle, public transportation or an authorized commercial transportation provider.

You can drive to Lake Louise, but parking fills up very early. A separate national park pass is also required.

For the 2027 season, it is best to check the latest information from Parks Canada, as schedules and access rules can change.

Getting Around Calgary and Beyond

Within Calgary itself, tourists can use the C-Train light rail system. Calgary Tower is only a couple of blocks away, while Studio Bell is located close to City Hall station.

Heritage Park can be reached conveniently by taking bus 502 from Heritage station.

There is no metro or commuter train connecting Calgary directly with the Canadian Rockies. Buses and shuttles operate on these routes, but some services run only during the summer and stop only at designated locations.

You can rent a car directly at the airport, but then you become the driver, navigator and the person responsible for making sure you do not miss your park shuttle reservation.

There is another option: let someone else take care of the road.

Why a Private Driver Is Especially Valuable in Calgary

The weather can change faster than you can change your clothes. A Chinook may first melt the snow, while freezing temperatures at night turn the water into ice. Black ice is a familiar feature of Calgary winters. Appropriate tyres and winter driving experience are important on the road, which is one reason why travelling with an experienced local driver can be particularly convenient.

During the Calgary Stampede, the city belongs to the crowds. For ten days, Stampede Park welcomes more than a million visitors. Being dropped off near the entrance is often much easier than searching for parking, and after an evening concert you can simply return to your hotel with your driver.

The mountains require planning. Your driver can take you to the shuttle departure point or to Lake Louise and adapt the day's itinerary to your reservation time. And while travelling, you can simply enjoy the mountain ranges outside the window.

For Business Travel and Special Guests

A private driver in Calgary is useful not only for tourists. On a business trip, keeping your schedule on track is often the priority: a meeting downtown, lunch, an exhibition on the other side of the city and an evening flight.

A corporate transfer can cover the entire itinerary with one booking: one vehicle, one driver and scheduled pick-up times at every destination. This format is suitable for executives and senior managers, entrepreneurs, investors, conference attendees and exhibition participants.

For guests who expect a higher level of service, VIP transfers are available: a business-class vehicle, pick-up at YYC Airport and transportation to a hotel, office or private residence. The same format is suitable for VIP guest transportation, weddings and private events.

What Services Are Available

Flying into YYC? Choose an airport transfer. Your flight number is provided when booking, allowing the pick-up to be adjusted according to the actual flight arrival time. You will be met in the arrivals area, your driver will assist with your luggage, and from there you can travel to your hotel, office or directly into the mountains — to Canmore or Banff.

Need to travel from one location to another, for example from a conference to dinner or to a nearby city? Book a point-to-point transfer, with a return journey if required.

For a day in the mountains, the Calgary Stampede or the Olympic slopes, hourly chauffeur service is often the most convenient option: the vehicle and driver remain at your disposal, while you decide where and when to stop.

If you are staying for several days, for example for an exhibition or business trip, daily chauffeur service is also available.

Your itinerary can extend beyond Calgary: long-distance trips across Alberta and to other destinations in Canada can also be arranged. The vehicle is selected according to your group: you specify the class, vehicle type, number of passengers and luggage requirements in the booking form.

How to Relax in Calgary

Calgary receives around 2,400 hours of sunshine each year, and even January can be remarkably bright. This means you can plan your day without rushing: start the morning on the hills of Nose Hill Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America, enjoy the views, then explore music or history before finishing the day with dinner.

When temperatures drop, Calgary's +15 system is particularly useful. These enclosed pedestrian walkways, located approximately five metres above street level, connect buildings throughout downtown, allowing you to walk through many city blocks without going outside.

MyChauffeurDrive Makes It Work

MyChauffeurDrive is a booking system that connects customers around the world with professional transportation providers. You choose the type of journey, specify your pick-up and destination, date, time and number of passengers, and the booking is assigned to a local transportation provider.

There is no need to search for a transportation company yourself in an unfamiliar country, while the route, pick-up time and planned stops can be arranged in advance. Specific travel conditions should be confirmed when booking, as they may depend on the individual transportation provider and local regulations.
